March 12
Bvt. Maj. J.R. Stone

Maj: Your communication of the 7th inst. addressed to Gen. Brown inquiring "what pecuniary assistance can be rendered" and "what number of teachers can be obtained" &c for various places, has been referred to me. Time for correspondence with various benevolent associations will be required before a proper formal endorsement can be made. I however take this method to say that the money you ask for will be promptly appropriated whenever, through any source, proper provision can be made for a teacher. It will not be practicable or expedient to appropriate money for schoolhouses, except where there is assurance of the maintenance of a school. That must first be obtained. I will do my utmost, in every instance, to secure this result; but the resources of the charitable associations are, at this season of the year, very limited.

Very Resp'y Yours
