doors of knowledge and set them more or less a ajar. A good circulating library throws them wide open. It is desired that you should take immediate steps to this end, inviting the cooperation and active assistance of any whom you may suppose to be friendly, and especially of every teacher. They will, perhaps, be your chief dependence. It is believed that [[strikethrough]] every [[/strikethrough]] each teacher might procure contributions of from 20 to 50 volumes among their friends at home, which might be forwarded through their associations. A beginning of several hundred volumes has already been made in this city, for a Richmond Library. The same movement will be made in the other principal towns. When there are positive signs of success, you will please advertise me of it. Whenever a Library shall b fairly established, it will be given into the custody of Trustees -- colored probably -- under such regulations as shall ensure its safety and usefulness.
