The American Tract Society has donated me some primers, and you will receive some of them by express. We have been explicitly forbidden at Washington to expend any money for books, so that I can only send such as I can beg, and the Associations supporting teachers have stopped giving away books. In regard to school houses, alas, we have no option, but are obliged to follow the charitable associations, churches or individuals who will pledge the support of teachers, and appropriate money toward providing school-houses only were [[where]] a teacher has previously been pledged. If you can give assurance that a school will be maintained at any point then it will be possible for me to endorse your application favorably Very Resp'y R. M. Manly Sup. Education
