Rev. Rich'd Foster:

Dear Bro. Yours of the 2d and also a letter from Matthew M. Leivey dated the 5th inst have been rec'd. You ask how you are to be supported &. I wish you all distinctly to understand this matter, so as not to meet with disappointment. The Bureau never pays teachers wages. Their support comes either from some benevolent society or from the scholars, and the teacher comes out on his own responsibility and must look out for his own pay. I do not know of a single benevolent society at the north that will support any teachers during the summer. If you and your friends come out, I want you to have your eyes open to this fact. You will have to pick up your own support among the people. If it was possible to assure you of a support I would be glad to do so, but it is not possible. Please show this to Mr. Leivey, as my answer to him.

Yours Truly,
R.M. Manly
