Dear Sir:
The generous donation of 5000 U.S. Primers rec'd from the American Tract Society, through your agency last summer is exhausted, but the demand is only begun. These have all been sent out to Bureau officers and private individuals (who have been properly endorsed), on their application, for gratuitous distribution in sections where the people are not enjoying the advantages of the schools supported by northern charity. It has not been possible for me to follow these books to witness and second the reception they have met, and the good they have done, neither have the persons through whom they have been distributed made special report in regard to them. But this we know, that none of them are thrown away, or suffered to lie idle upon the shelf. They are studied by the children on the sunny side of thousands of the cabins of the poor in the day time, and at night the sons
