Rev Fr. Childs

Dear Sr:
I am directed by Fenl Bram the Asst. Com'r. of the Bureau to write to you earnestly soliciting a donation of books for the State Penitentiary located in this city. There are in that Institution nearly five hundred convicts, more than two thirds of whom are colored men - many of them as much sinned against as sinning. We have a new incumbent in the office of Superintendent, a good friend to the freedpeople, and he desires to introduce a system of Sabbath-, and as far as practicable, of week-day instruction. We have a supply of "Lincoln Primer or First Reader", but we need some of the second and 3rd Books of the service about 150 of the 2d and 50 of the third. We know of no way to get them but to ask you for them - confidently believing that the appeal will not be disregarded -
Very Respy-
