Miss L. Crocke of Teachers Comr

Your of the 22d is recd. I wrote to Miss Gardner several days since. so that her anxiety is relieved. As I understand the matter the barrack used as a school house by Miss G is on land which must be given up. In accordance with Bureau regulations, if the building should be turned over to your society as a "building", it would still remain the property of the Bureau, must be borne upon the Quarter Masters and might be subject to unfavorable contingencies, notwithstanding it might be upon a lot belonging to yourselves. On the other hand the building can be turned over to you under the name of "old lumber from a useless building", and be dropped altogether from Q.M. papers, becoming exclusively your own property — or of local trustees.

If you are prepared to take this building and go forward and provide yourselves with such a house as you want (accepting the uncertainty which at present attaches to additional aid from the Bureau) I would recommend that your society, through its executive officer, apply for the "old lumber" as above suggested. The application should be addressed to Gen O. Brown, Asst. Com'r.
I would remind that your society as such cannot hold real estate in Virginia, nor can your treasurer as treasurer. It can held by any non-resident individual, by a local board of trustees.
