Dear Madam: I am sorry not to have made a more prompt reply to your letter of the 21st ult. Have been hindered hitherto. The subject of collections from the colored people in aid of their schools has had my most careful attention. Those several elements involved in the question, as, 1st The condition of the colored people in respect to employment and resources, 2d the cooperation or want of it between associations laboring in the same field. 3d the resolutions with which teachers  will carry out their instructions in the matter &c-

In writing with reference to next years operations I shall have the city of Richmond particularly in mind. You ask whether the people can meet the expense of teachers board and the incidental expenses of the schools. You have ten teachers here, the N.E. Branch has eight, the N.Y. Friends have ten, and the Bap. H. Miss. (which will probably fall into your hands next year) has two;- thirty all together. I do not think the board of these 30 teachers and the incidental expenses of 30 schools can be met by the people.
