Rev J.W. Alvord

My Dear Sir:

The enclosed communication rec'd yesterday impressed me so unfavorably, as to create grave doubts of its genuineness. I consulted Genl Brown and he thinks it can hardly be genuine and suggests that I write to you, as your name is used, and learn what are the facts.

We honor and love Genl Howard too much to be willing that either enemies or misjudging friends should compromise him before the world; and it seems to us from our standpoint, that such a movement would be severely criticised by a portion of the colored people, and would make such an avalanche of invidious comment in the rebel and copperhead press as has seldom been heard. The whole matter seems so doubtful that I write for advice.

Very Respy
