Miss Nellie McChase
Dear friend -
I hope you are well and as happy as can be. Mabeth and I - the two heads of the family - are not well at present, but expect to be soon as we are taking "doctor's stuff" for that purpose.
The particular object of writing is to let you know that our anticipations of help from the city council are likely to fail. The newspapers are carrying on a frightful war against it, and we cannot so far as now appears - depend upon it. How, then, stands the prospect of your return? What is the most that you can depend upon receiving from your auxilary? When I know much you can get there, I shall be able to judge whether I can make up the balance from other sources.
The man who "has no vices" - your priest called on me the other day to borrow a ladder. What in the world can he want of a ladder? His head is up there now! I write at the office or all would send love.

Very Respy
