Miss Mattie Birge
My Good Friend
When you left it was expected that the city Council would bear half the expense of Teachers salaries; but the newspapers made furious was upon the measure and their favorable action has been revoked; and there is no present prospect of help from that source. So the societies must rely upon themselves as heretofore. In this light what are your prospects? What is the most you can expect from your auxiliary? something can be collected from the pupils, and there is a charitable fund to which I have access (a new thing) from which I can have something in in aid of your school. When I learn how much you can raise, I shall know whether it will be possible to bring you back. As nothing is to be spent on salaries of officers &c in New York, I suppose that about $400 from all sources will support a teacher, which would $20 per month for salary, $20 for board, and say $40 for traveling and other expenses. If you can raise $300 or $350, it will suffice I should judge unless you can do better. Of course I desire, very much, the return of all my good teachers: I hope you are right well and happy--
Truly
