W.P. Austin A.S.A.C.
Dear Sir:
The plans you suggest for benefitting the freedmen are of the very best in my opinion. I have been trying for two years to find the means to try the experiment you propose, and have almost the pledge of $2000 for that purpose. One thousand has been pledged, but does not come to hand. I will remember your suggestions in case the means should be found.

I hope Mrs. Austin and her companion have reached you in [[?]] by this time.

Your application for transportation was returned from Washington with the inquiry "By what society are the ladies commissioned". To meet the difficulty I immediately asked the N.Y. Branch F.U. Com. to Commission them and returned the paper endorsed accordingly. This was not to involve the Society in any expense.
