J.L. Wilcox A.S.A.C.

Dear Sir:

We should be glad to have a school at Clarksdale at once, if it can be done by renting a schoolhouse. With our rapidly narrowing resources we ought not to attempt much in the way of erecting or buying school-houses. That is a work which the state itself must soon do, and we don't care to put educational funds into permanent improvements for the relief of the treasury of the state. If the school-house you allude to is for sale, doubtless it is for rent; and if the freedman can assume the maintenance of a school two years, they certainly can for the balance of this year. We look principally for present results and not for foundations for the future - we are not able to compass both. I trust that you find that the house can be rented at not more than $10. and that you can interest the people in this plan.

If so make application accordingly.
