but only such young people as are pretty well matured in body, and as have developed some stability of character and some earnestness of purpose to become somebody and to do something. They are all [[?]] pupils and are from various parts of the country, and are received for three years or longer if necessary, in order to accomplish the end aimed at Virginia through discipline in the practical arts of [[?]] and in a course of normal instruction. In order to do this they are required practically to learn and do all that pertains to thorough farming and good housekeeping. The males do the entire work of the farm and the females of the house even to making the clothing. In this way they largely support themselves, and at the same time pursue their studies systematically.

It is believed that this is just what the freed people need, - teachers of their own race, who while they are missionaries of the spelling book, can also be teachers of a better civilization as symbolized in the plow and the broom. I think this a very important institution of learning, founded upon a good idea, and well managed, and worthy of your further investigation and of assistance from the Peabody fund.
