Miss Sue C. Bolling,

I wish it were possible to meet your wishes, as expressed in your communication of the 4th inst The only public funds available for educational purposes, in this state, are those of the Freedmens Bureau; and all its funds are used in the construction, rental and repairs of school-houses, the support of teachers coming wholly from charitable sources or the freedmen themselves. The law restricts us to this method, and in fact the funds of the Bureau would not go far, if it salaried teachers and supported free schools outright. We are looking earnestly for the day when the state shall undertake this work, peculiarly its own.

I am sorry you have so poor a remuneration for your services, and yet should regret to have you give up your school.

Very Respy
