Wm J. Courtnay

Dear Sir:

Your letter of the 14th is recd. I am glad that you are trying to start a school in your neighborhood. Mrs. Alston is a good teacher, and if she wishes to go to your place I shall be glad. But are you aware that we cannot send teachers unless the people board them. The charitable societies at the north are not able to pay the teachers salaries and board too. If your people will furnish a good boarding place for the teacher and meet the expense of her board, I think I can send you one. It is not worth your while to build a school house unless you can do this. If you can do this I shall be able to help you a little in [[strikethrough]] buying some [[/strikethrough]] paying for some of the lumber, nails and glass for your school house.

Yours Truly
