Rev. E.G. Corprew

Dear Sir:

I have been authorized to expend some money in the erection of a good school-house for Miss Bartlett's School [[note]] Julia M Portsmouth [[/note]] upon this condition: Viz: The people of Portsmouth interested in such an enterprise, must purchase and pay for a suitable lot on which to erect said building. The lot must be deeded to a board of Trustees, properly appointed, who will hold it for school purposes forever.

Can your people do this at once? Please consult with the leading colored men, and write me without delay what is their judgment in the matter.

If the conclusion shall be that they cannot purchase a lot and pay down for it, I shall be glad, if possible, to rent a building and fit it up in a good style for schools. Can such a building, or one or two rooms be found. The interests of your people are so great in this matter, that I hope they will give it immediate attention.

Very Respy
R.M. Manly
