Mark F. Smith

Sir:

Your letter of the 6th is Rec'd. If I understand you, Buck's children were expelled from school, because their father voted as he wished to. If so I do not blame him for refusing to pay his tuition bill. Was it not cowardly in Mr. Mathews to insist on the children's being turned out, and in you in consenting to it? I should hope, for the credit of you both, there is some mistake about it.

I do not think it worth the while to build school-houses where the children are exposed to be be turned out of school, because the father votes as a free man, instead of as a slave. The rent will be discontinued from the middle of this month
