J.W. Cromwell

Dear Sir:

I have just returned from an absence of 18 days in the North and find yours of the 23rd Ult.

Nothing is due to anybody from the Peabody Ed. Fund. All that has been promised has been paid. Not one fifth part of the teachers rec'd anything from it. It was paid only by special agreement in each case and where the teacher was not otherwise provided for.

I am sorry for the poor progress made by the Portsmouth Educational Aso'n.

I have heard nothing from Elmer Depot.

I have not the 7th Semi Annual Report.

The Board of Education has appointed no teachers at all as yet; and when it comes to the appointment there is no probability that any except residents of this city will be appointed. There are so many living who desire positions, that they will be likely to get the few that can be had.
