Miss Matilda J Taylor

I have been absent from the city in the North since the middle of August. That will explain why your letters were not replied to promptly. It seems to me that you should have found out about books before beginning school. I do not know anything about your school now. In what building do you teach? Do you have to pay rent? Where are you to get your pay for your services? Do the people who send to school pay you? Do they pay your board? What makes you think the Bureau furnishes books? It does not and never did. Once I had some books given me to give away, but I have not any now to give away. I have a few books which I bought at a very low rate and can sell at the same. The Freedmen, everywhere are expected to buy their books. I am glad to have you trying to good and mean to help you. Write us soon as you get this, what kind of books you want and how many.

Yours Truly,
R.M. Manly
