Capt. Schaeffer is on an inspecting tour in So. West Va. but it has not yet reported. When he does so I will know better about Wytheville.

The standard you set up for the people to come to in the support of schools is good in theory. In fact I might almost claim a patent on it myself, yet there will not be very many schools where that arrangement can be carried through the year. Three fourths of the corn crop is gone by drought, and with it the principal "stay and staff of bread" for the people. Is there a community as poor in the entire North that will do as much for education as boarding the teachers will be to these people? I do not wish to discourage you from pressing your plan, but to show you that it may be perfectly successful.

In haste
