Dear Minnie
Now at last I have opened your big package of pictures. I think that your new way of using old pictures is very good.. I like many of the new big ones very much. What you are doing when you cut up your pictures and glue them together again is called collage. It is a French word and it is pronounced like the word "coal" for the first syllable and then the the last syllable begins like the word "art" but instead of the rt you pronounce the ge like the ge in the word "age", or something like that. Change the a in age to the sound of the a in art, and you will be doing pretty well.
I am sending you a package of those old stained pictures of yours, 33 of them. I insured the package, so be sure to let me know if you do not receive it in good condition. If you cut these up and glue them on new backs for new pictures, the way you have done with the ones I have here, I have some advice for you from William Parker, the man who was on our committee for you exhibitions. He has taught the art of collage here in New York. I asked him what was the best glue for you to use, to make the paper stick well sad permanently.
He advises using either Sobo glue, or Liquitex Polymer Medium. I think you can get either of them at a good art store. The Liquitex Polymer Medium is also good to use instead of varnish, to cover the picture when you are all done. It makes a non-shiny protection and cover. Mr Parker said that this finish will not look clear at first, but that it dries absolutely clear and hard. If you like a shiny finish, he recommends that you use a spray varnish called Damar Blair. This is better than a varnish that you brush on. But he says to be sure to tell you that if you use Damar Blair spray it must be the very last thing you do to the picture. You cannot paint on top of it all. The Liquitex Polymer Medium can be painted over with any paint except waterpaint.
Another thing you can use Liquitex Polymer Medium for is to mix powder corks with, instead of oil. Si it is a very useful thing for artists.
I hope that you received my letter of September 25 and the check enclosed for $65.00. I am a bit worried because I have not heard from you. I hope you are not feeling badly. Do please write to me.
Give my regards to your mother and George. With love,
Rina S.
