Miss Elaine Kilbourne
Anacostia High School
Washington, D.C.

Dear Miss Kilbourne:

When, through your training and effort, several of your students became winners in the Science Talent Search, you probably thought you had done all that could be asked of you. It is with a feeling of reluctance, therefore, that I ask your indulgence in this matter.

As part of a study which began in 1953 at Teachers College, Columbia University on the role of the Teacher in the training of potential science students, I am continuing to ascertain the characteristics of superior science teachers. You are one of the sixty-one teachers in the nation who has sponsored two winners in the Science Talent Search during the last seventeen years; therefore, you are particularly qualified to have and to express an opinion on this problem. I realize that you cannot be part of this exclusive group unless you have a full schedule. Would you, onoetheless, fill out the enclosed questionnaire, and return in the self-addressed envelope.

If you would like a report of the results of this survey please check the appropriate box in the lower left corner of the questionnaire.

My sincerest thanks.

Cordially your,
