Ana. High Teachers Honored

Samuel H. Fishkin

In recognition of his outstanding teaching of science Mr. Samuel Fishkin, 2722 Thirty-second st., S.E., now a biology teacher at Anacostia High School, received a citation from the National Capital Area Joint Board on Science Education of the Washington Academy of Sciences, and D.C. Council of Engineering and Architectural Societies, at the Willard Hotel on Feb. 25.

When asked what he thought of it, he explained, "It was one of the most pleasant surprises of my life to open my mail box and find this letter selecting me for a science teacher's citation, because I feel that I have devoted my life to teaching, that all teachers should do their job to the best of their ability without expecting any other award than to have played a part in the education of the coming generation."

Mr. Fishkin has taught in public school at different levels for 29 years. In addition he has spent 3 years preparing high school biology curriculum and served as Director of the D.C. Science Fair for three years.

After the first screening the group of 1500 recommended teachers was narrowed down to 300. Following a second screening, 62 were awarded citations for outstanding performance of science or mathematics.

Mrs. Elaine Kilbourne

Mrs. Elaine Kilbourne, chemistry teacher at Anacostia High School, has recently received recognition as an outstanding science teacher. Her award, a certificate and book entitled Nostrand's Scientific Encyclopedia was presented by the Joint Board on Science Education at the Washington Academy of Sciences at a banquet at the Willard Hotel on Feb. 25.

Each year the Board selects outstanding science and mathematics teachers for recognition of their teaching and student encouragement. Mrs. Kilbourne was one of the 62 being so honored.

Last summer Mrs. Kilbourne won a General Electric scholarship for summer study at Union College in Schenectady, N. Y. Upon returning to Anacostia, she, together with Mr. Stephen Hopkins and Mr. Ted Davenport, organized the Science Seminar. The purpose of the Seminar is to share the knowledge gained during the summer with the student body.

Previously, Mrs. Kilbourne was presented a plaque from the American Chemical Society also for her outstanding teaching and student encouragement. Along with her teaching schedule, and aside from the Seminar, Mrs. Kilbourne sponsors the Science Honor Society and is in charge of the school testing program.
