NSTA Meets in Atlantic City
The Seventh Annual Convention of the National Science Teachers will be held at the Ambassador Hotel in Atlantic City, N.J. from March 31 to April 4. With the theme, "Science Education for America: An Appraisal and a Look Ahead", this meeting should be among the best ever held by this professional organization. General sessions are concerned with Foreign Science Education Programs, American Schools and Science Education, and A Look Ahead in Science Education. Special features include elementary science workshops, teaching demonstrations, and the popular"Here's How I Do It" sessions. A large number of curbstone clinics will provide for discussion and exchange of experiences, ideas, and viewpoints on a wide range of problems and issues in science teaching. These are largely informal without lengthy papers or prepared speeches. Some 19 discussion groups will be concerned with problems such as curriculum content, evaluation of instruction and achievement, program for gifted children, and the use of TV in teaching science.
The annual Exposition of Science Teaching Materials held in conjunction with the meeting will present the largest array of textbooks, laboratory supplies and equipment, and audio-visual aid ever shown at an NSTA convention.
The registration feed is $3.00 for he entire period or $1.00 on the daily basis. Advance registrations will be accepted if mailed to the Washington office of NSTA prior to March 10.

Seminar Sessions Offer College Level Science
College level science is being offered to outstanding students through seminar sessions. This advanced science study group is held on Monday nights in room 212 when students gather to hear lectures by area scientists.
Forty-two students signed up to attend a night session once a week, but the membership has been limited to 34. Students are chosen on the basis of their achievement test scores in science, science reading ability, and mathematics.
Faculty sponsors Mrs. Elaine Kilbourne, Mr. Frank Davenport, and Mr. Stephen Hopkins originated the idea of seminar sessions after they all received grants for advanced study last summer. They felt they should share the gained knowledge with their students, thus beginning the seminar sessions. They receive no recompension for their services other than the knowledge that the students are learning. Area scientists have consented to come and speak to the group.
Mr. Bertram Stiller, a nuclear physicist from the Naval Research Lab addressed the group upon the subject of primary cosmic rays at the first meeting held on Nov. 24. Slides, manipulated by his 11 year old son, David, were used to illustrate his talk. Mr. Stiller held a discussion after he finished speaking as was questioned by students for a full hour. On Dec. 8 he returned to speak on secondary cosmic rays.
Mr. Davenport plans to teach a biology course at all the meetings during the month of January exclusive of one on Jan. 17, 1959, when Dr. Terry Godlove from the Naval Research Lab will come to speak on particle acceleration.
Further future plans include a trip to the chemistry and biology labs at George Washington University and guest lecturers from the area. Emphasis for the year will be placed upon nuclear energy and its underlying principles.
Officers for the group includes: Patricia Page, director; Mary Maddox, historian; Patsy Morgan, secretary; Richard Fishkin, treasurer; and Patricia Norgorden, program director.
