SCIENCE EDUCATION SPECIALIST

The Division of Public Information is responsible broadly for (1) promoting voluntary cooperation and compliance through an educational approach, directed to the public and industry, (2) for public information matters of a general nature and (3) for compliance with the statutory requirement concerning publication of the results of all legal actions instituted under the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.  It participates with the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, and Bureau Directors in planning, organizing, and directing the administration of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the Federal Hazardous Substances Labeling Act, the Tea Importation Act, and the Import Milk Act.

To Satisfy an ever-increasing public demand for information about FDA activities, especially at the secondary school level, a School Information Program was initiated during fiscal year 1961.  In addition to answering the overt academic quest for knowledge about the Federal Government's consumer protection services, the program is being developed to help young people prepare for their personal responsibilities as consumers - today, in their own right - tomorrow in an adult role.

Thus, with objectives parallel to the over-all consumer education endeavors of the FDA, the school Information Program will be directed towards those disciplines in which the study of consumer problems is already an integral part of the curricula - mathematics, social studies, health, home economics and business education, plus the burgeoning areas of the physical and biological sciences.

The incumbent will help develop secondary school science materials that can be reproduced and distributed to teachers and students for individual or group project reference.
