Dear Sir,

In reply to your communication of the 20th inst. relating to Yorktown [[checkmark]] and Magruder, [[checkmark]] I have the honor to submit the following, and request that the same may be accepted as a reply also to the letter of the A.A.A. Genl, of the same date, relating to the same subject. 

It is true that Yorktown and Magruder and several other places on the lower end of the "Peninsula of Va," and on the Eastern Shore are without schools. The same is true of Lexington and some other places in "The Valley", of Warrenton and other places in Northern Virginia and of Amelia C.H. Halifax C.H. and other places in Southern Virginia. But it is not true that there has been any lack of interest, forethought or labor to supply these deficiencies. Mr. Ayers' [[checkmark]] statement that I "have been written to frequently on the subject in vain" has not any truth in it. I have not been written to at all, "in vain" or otherwise, in regard to the schools of which he speaks, except in reply to my own letters to
