in the Southern portion has brought the Freedmen to greater straights in these Sections than they have been in before since the war; and while they do what they can to help support schools, outside aid must be had. 

I have not dared use the money, already furnished and promised, freely, lest I would be entirely out of funds in the middle of the season. 

I should be glad of an assurance of some additional funds (additional to the $2000 pledged) even if the whole amount ($4000) cannot be had.
