Dear Madam,

Yours of the 2nd inst came into my hands as I was taking the train for a journey into the southern part of the state, and hence has remained unanswered. When our mutual friend Mr. Richards [By the way he was married on Tuesday of this week to Miss Nichols] spoke to me of your daughter. I hoped I might find or make a suitable place for her. But so far I cannot. There are places enough, but they are unsuitable. The best places for ladies to live pleasantly and teach, were, of course, occupied at the opening of the schools in Oct. or soon after; and those that remain seem to be only such as colored young women can properly occupy.

I should esteem it both a pleasure and a duty to be of any service to yourself or your daughter
