heard of eight teachers at Danville. That was the number Alfred Jones named as their complement. I do not understand that persons assisting in night school merely, or supts., as such, draw the rental, but only those who have charge of day schools.

The second quotation has but a trifling application, in case of the school aat Lopsleys Run.

The buildings at Danville "belong to the Govt." and the buildings at Clarksville, Charlotte C.H. and Wytheville are "rented by the Govt." - and by the third rule quoted cannot even indirectly draw rental. Ten Dol. per mo., and no more, on teachers in other buildings than these, and nothing on teachers in there, seems to be the rule. Such are my instructions. They are very hard in case of your society. I will gladly join you in a petition to General Howard to have the "indirectly" part of the rule suspended in your case. But you will see that I cannot do it:
