Miss Anna Gardner

Your letter of the 16th & Roberts came to hand as was on my way to the train, to leave town, day before yesterday morning. I reply on my return. "Indian Town" in King William Co., "Bowling Green" in Caroline Co., "Templeman's Cross Roads" in Westmoreland Co. and probably Halifax C.H. and "New Hill Creek" Norfolk Co. (I shall know in a few days) and other places want teachers. The openings you see are ready; and I can tell you, in a word, what I can do under the law and my instructions. I can pay the teacher $10. per month in behalf of the Govt. and no more. The people will board the teacher; and that is the end of compensation, so far as I know. It is utterly useless for me to call on any Society, unless your own will help your Normal scholars, wishing to teach, in transportation and for the salary. I hope they will be willing to teach for the $10. That is precisely what I rec'd for my first school, and I worked like a hero, and got a good name which gave me better wages afterward. The Societies are bankrupt, and are failing all around.

Templeman's Cross Roads wants a female and would be a good place
