I have the honor to return herewith, the communication of the Sup't of Public Instruction for North Carolina, with answers to his questions, as far as the information at my command will allow.

1st.  The State of Virginia has never received any aid from the National Government towards the education of its people, except such as has been intended, through the Freedmen's Bureau to Refugees and Freedmen.  This, in the five years ending June 30 1870 will have amounted to about three hundred thousand (300,000) Dollars.

2nd.  The State has no educational fund.  It has no resources for the support of schools except what shall be raised by taxation.  The "Literary Fund" was lost in the war, except one million five hundred thousand (1,500,000) of Va State stocks which stood to the credit of that Fund.  As the State is the
