Miss Lucinda Smith

Your note of the 9th inst together with Mr. Langston ✓ is recd.

I understand that Miss Henry ✓ has left the school at Freedmans Village. If that is the case I see no objection to your have the place. There are, however, school trusties at that place who have the immediate control of affairs. It would be proper that you should confer with them, and have a well understood arrangement and agreement. The only assistance that school has been having from the Bureau is the $10. per month which the trustees obtain under the name "Rental."

Mrs. H.W. Polhemus. Yours of the 6th is just Recd I think the method your society adopts is very hard and unjust toward teachers, but it is entirely beyond my control, even in the way of advice. I have just presented to Rev. Mr. Mitchell✓ a similar case of hardship, which I hope will call attention to yours. Teachers should be paid monthly. I am not willing to believe that when the society comes fully to understand your case, it will do you any injustice. Its officers are christian gentlemen, who neither would be willing nor could they afford to do wrong. I am sorry to have you leave the field at this time, when faithful are to much needed. I had expected to see you in your school in the spring.
Very truly Your Friend
