James H. Johnson, Chester Station, Chesterfield Co. Va.

Sir:

In reply to yours of the 10th inst. I can only say that the funds of the Bureau are so far exhausted that I cannot aid any more schools (new schools). There is but little left of the Peabody Fund. I might help you to the amount of $5. per month out of that.

Yours &c.

Dear Sir: Mr. Jones was mistaken in supposing that a building, belonging to the Q.M. Dept. in the Army could be given away for any purpose. If the building was required for some public purpose where it stands, the use of it might be given, but it cannot go off the Q.M's papers without the money going on.

I shall not be able to help erect any more school-houses this year - and that means not at all, I presume.

Yours truly
R.M. Manly
