Miss Anna Gardner
In regard to the deed for the lot on [[which?]]your [[?]]house stands.

It was Maj Morse's duty to have it recorded. It seems he did not do it. [[?]] how had an exhaustive search made for the deed among the papers of this office and among the archives at Washington. It cannot be found. I can only suppose that Maj Morse[[carried??]] it off with him. I do not know and cannot [[find??]] where he is. There is ample evidence that a deed was given and the purchase money paid. I [[?hold]]no further power. It now rests with the [[?]]. I presume if they apply to [[Mr. Powell??]] he will voluntarily give them a deed. If not he can be compelled to. But they only can compel him: I can do nothing further.
