June 22nd
Sgt. Major Genl. O. O. Howard [[?]]
Commissioner,
General,
I have the honor to request permission to expend 80.00 for additional expense in painting the Merrell School House in this city, the former appropriation for repairs being insufficient. This building stands immediately adjoining the new Normal and High school in process of erection. It is an excellent school house but unsightly on the exterior, as it was covered with whitewashed lumber from hospital buildings; hence the need of painting.
