| 1869 Oct 7th 2. | Ewell, Becy S (From War Dept, Bu. &c) (See Endorsement) | Williamsburg, Va, Sept 28th 1869 States that a colored school ought to be established at Williamsburg, and a good house built, and asks aid in erecting the same | Office Supt of Ed, Va Richmond, Va, Oct 7th 1869 Respectfully returned to Major Genl. O.O. Howard, U.S.A. Commissioner. The Friends Freedmans Association of Philadelphia have maintained a good school in the City of Williamsburg, and another at Fort Magruder, a mile distant, during the last four years. They have, however, now withdrawn from that place in order to concentrate their efforts in the Southern and Western part of the state, and I have arranged with the American Missionary Association to adopt the Williamsburg school. I will visit the place and see what they have what is necessary. R.M. Manly Supt. Ed. Va. |
