Dear General:

I wish to communicate with a colored man by the name of Ellis Johnson who it is supposed is now living with a Lady by the name of Toombs near Port Royal Caroline Co. Virginia.
His wife Mary (with two of her children) is now living with me at my place in the Country. She has endeavored, in every way she is capable of, to induce him to come north but it is alleged he cannot get away from his old mistress.
Will you be kind enough to give me the name of some one of your officers, at or near Port Royal, or any other white person, not a Rebel, with whom I may Communicate and thus reach Ellis.
Numerous letters have been written to him by his wife since she ran away from Slavery less than one year ago, but no reply has been received.
She was owned by one Thomas Huebe
