their Methodist brethren. As a church & congregation they had no separate organization prior to the war; but worshipped with their white brethren in a house they helped to build. During the war the Am. Bap. Home Mission Society sent a missionary down here, to take care of the Court St. Baptist church, the pastor of which had been sent beyond our lines for disloyalty. This missionary separated the colored members of the church from the white, & organized them into an independent church. By this operation these colored people lost all right in the meeting house they had helped to build & were virtually turned into the street. Ever since the war, these colored Baptists have been struggling to build & finish a "worship-house" & so far they have got the shell of one. It will take them several years more to finish it. I state these facts to show
