unless School Houses can be built for them, and suitable teachers furnished to take charge of from 21 to 25 Scholars. at each place perhaps as high as as 30 at Lebanon. I did not visit the country, but obtained my information from reliable sources, from those who are familiar with the people in those localities. A col'd man, Jesse Harris, formerly teacher near Jeffersonville, Tazewell County, proposes to open a school in the eastern part of Russell County, but at what particular locality I am not informed. Expect to receive an answer to my letter addressed to him at an early day.

The school at Jeffersonville, Tazewell County (over two miles from the court house) bought by Jesse Harris
"Cold" has been discontinued and a col'd teacher formerly in charge of the school at Goodson, Sarah E. Brown, is making an effort to secure a sufficient number pupils to pay her for taking charge of a school at that place. I am informed that she is not qualified for the work - and that the colored people are anxious for a good school to be organized in the town, where a large hall can be secured for about $5.00 per month and it is supposed from 70 to 80 scholars can be collected. Until recently they have had a Sabbath School numbering 70 scholars. I supplied them with a number of Sunday School Books. The school referred to as taught by Jesse Harris, was held in a log building, 12x18 feet, and owned by the freed people. Its distance from the town made it inconvenient for very many living on the opposite side, to attend during most of the session.
