public attention, and secured unqualified public approval - The opposition which formerly existed, and which found expression in violence to the school houses, insults to the teachers, and ribald jests in the news paper press, has entirely disappeared.

The normal and High School, with its handsom building and furniture, its accomplished teachers, its well mannered pupils, who by their scholarship already justify all that has been done for them, has had a leading influence.

The white schools conducted by the "Soldiers Memorial Society" of Boston have been, as heretofore. under the superintendence of Mr Andrew Washburn and have maintained their high character as New England representation schools, and have done much to reconcile the people to the introduction of the public school system.

I have been specially pleased also with the schools at Lynchburg, Danville, Charlottsville, Alexandria and Hampton at each of which places are successful normal classes,
