Richmond also is moving. The fruitless efforts which were made last year to induce the city to provide for the education of her youth in Public Schools have been renewed, and this time, with success. The Common Council has passed an ordinance, providing for a uniform system of Public Schools, appropriated money to carry it into effect and has selected for the Board of Education, men who believe in the system to be established, and will exert themselves to make it a success. This Board will cooperate with the Bureau, with the charitable associations, and with the Revd. Dr. Sears, Agent of the Peabody Fund. It is expected to provide for about 5.000 pupils the first year at an expense to all parties of from $50,000. to $60,000. For the first time in the history of this city, the poor children as well as the rich, regardless of past history or present condition, will freely enjoy the blessing of good schools.
