P.S. The importance of maintaining this vantage ground for Republican principles can not be stated too strongly. The Freedmen need our presence and influence to keep their vote right. This is well understood by the vigilant old Rebel element and so it seeks to divide the colored people on this question of Church & School rights, or on any ground it can.
Miss Howland's School in Heathsville, mine here, & Miss Stebbins' who is building in this County, & another in Fairfield (whose land is in the same peril as this, & ought to be attended to at the same time) form the centre of a widely operating power in behalf of the School System in Virginia.
