Christiansburg, Va., February 7th 1870.
Rev. R.M. Manly
Supt. of Education, Va.,

Dear Sir:
My hands are full-have scarcely time to make out a report-regret delay in transmitting it to you. By reason of pressing duties at Hd. Quarters. I did not get started on a tour of inspection until the night of the 10th ultimo, the claims of the sick and destitute, among school children and others, the pressing wants of Teachers-large packages of mail matter and supplies of Books, Clothing, and Medicines, the receipt of which had to be acknowledged, supplies distributed, letters answered, &c, &c, prevented my traveling throughout the entire month-and consequently I have not as yet reached all the counties named in my order of Dec 27th, 1869. As far as possible however I have carried out instructions, and hope successfully to complete the work during the present month. The first school visited was that at Fincastle, Botetourt Co., which I found under good management, and in a prosperous condition. The Teachers seemed to be very careful, energetic and good disciplinaries. Their necessities are these-Desk for writing purposes, &c, a recitation room-and several large blackboards.
The examination of the scholars in their studies was quite satisfactory-and found the parents and friends deeply interested on the subject of Education
