from thence visited the school at Lapsley's Run, under charge of Samuel Pogue "Freedman" who is doing all in his power to make that little interest a success. I was delighted with the progress of the scholars, for the short time that the school has been organized and have no uneasiness in regard to the future. They want a large black-board and backs to benches, otherwise they have everything necessary for comfort and convenience. There is another school about six miles from that point, taught by the former assistant at Fincastle (during last school term) but the waters were too high, (caused by a heavy rain) and I could not reach there.
Understand the school to be well managed and doing a good work. At Locust Bottom found a very fine school taught by Clara R. Montier "Col'd" Teacher from Philada.-and great interest manifested among the People. I was exceedingly pleased with the examinist, and for the short time the school has been under instruction, they have done admirably well. Their necessities-blackboard, Desks and backs to benches. By special invitation and earnest appeal-went from thence to Natural Bridge, Rockbridge Co., where I held a large and enthusiastic educational meeting-and their cry is "come and help us." They have a good School House, and are willing to do everything that may be required of them, if only a Teacher is furnished. I do wish some arangements could be made to reach these people.
