Tuesday February 1st, I visited the School taught by Frederick Washington "Col'd" Longtown, Floyd County (22 miles from Christiansburg. Found them in a good house, but without sufficient light - they promise to have one or more windows put in the building. They are trying to purchase a piece of land on which to build a School House of their own, and may perhaps succeed during the Spring months. This was one of the dark places, but light is springing up, and although Frederick is not very well qualified, by reason of his limited knowledge, to accomplish a great deal, yet he is certainly doing a good work. I spent a whole day with the School, giving instruction to both Teacher and Scholars; and feel encouraged in regard to their future. I returned to Christiansburg Wed, February 2nd -Same night started for Newbern in company with the Teacher for Pearisburg, Giles Co. - secured conveyance for him the following morning; after which, visited the School under charge of Miss S. C. Markie. Remained with them through out the day, and found a good prosperous School. At night held a large enthusiastic educational meeting, in connection with other matters pertaining to the good of this race of people. In the afternoon at the close of school, over 30 Scholars united to form a Band of Hope Temperance Society -adding to the pledge "No Tobacco". During my tour of inspection thus far, scores of confirmed Tobacco Chewers & Smokers (and among them three of our Teachers) have given up the use of the weed - and many have been induced to give up strong drink. The good work of the Lord has also been advanced.

Transcription Notes:
the abbreviation "Col'd" is meant to indicate 'colored', I think. Should it be left as is, or revised? The rest of the page looks good.
