Red Lion Inn
Salisbury, England
September 23, 1960

Dear Mother,

It is rather hard to believe it, but here we are as scheduled! The Inn is a XV Century place, rather expensive I'm afraid ($7 for bed & breakfast), with [[strikethrough]] little [[strikethrough]] old casements, a lovely door and swing with reddening creeper (hangs down across on wires), a gas stove in the room & a huge comforter on the bed. Outside the room there have been some disturbances which have just about died out: youths on motorcycle and noisy English cars zoomed back & forth, and some family well-dressed boys get into a fight which a Bobby finally dispersed.

The trip was very restful at first. The ocean was at all times very calm and the sun shone every day. We had little vibration in our cabin or elsewhere. From the first we never made breakfast. Our shift was to eat at 8 a.m., 12:00 and 7:00. Instead, the steward brought big cups of fine coffee & hot or cold milk. The service of all stewards was extremely rapid, courteous & thorough; they went along with our attempts to converse with them
