We had a great triumph on Wednesday night. That was Gala night, with a Gala Diner (which for some reason meant no butter; but the sauces were great) and a Fancy Dress Contest. Jack designed (& we got a picture of us) a "Cubist Painting", involving the use of a coat hangers, extra eyes, noses and mouths, clothes worn backwards, etc. About 37 singles or couple entered; representing Napoleon, Turks, Indian Maidens, Fidel Castro, several shipwreck cases, the wife of our table set as the Flandre itself & us. to cut matters short, the applause greeting us was tremendous and we came off with the 3rd (of 12) prizes, a bottle of champagne which we shared with 8 people. Everybody we knew immediately came to us and said we should have won first prize, which was nicer even than having done so.

Well, enough for the present. We must see something of Salisbury,

Love, Doris
