a special project and does not have time to write letters for Jack or look at his paper or thesis work. We very much hope he gets time, tho', because if Jack can finish by Feb. his salary will double - otherwise not. But there isn't much Jack can do under the circumstances. The theory is that Hans wants the Nobel Prize. Jack's last card is "Help me get finished so I can help you on your project." Wouldn't it be nice, then, if he did get the Nobel Prize!! But the chances don't look good (for for the prize).

P.S. III. Grandpa does not know of the malignancy so of course you won't mention it.

I can't think of anything else for Christmas. I'm glad Dad got a bed. Perhaps he will have a sufficiently firm mattress now for his back. You remember, perhaps, Dad, what I thought you should get mother for Christmas?

Also: Marguerite can go back to work after the school X-mas vacation, will rest for the several weeks without missing much work.

Will, we visited Marguerite in the hospital last night after arriving rather late (5). She was under considerable sedation but seemed to be in good spirits. We don't know for sure what the operation shows, but apparently there was some malignancy. I don't know what she knows of course. At any rate, she appears to have a better than average chance for complete recovery, and is in good shape physically. She'll be in the hospital for ~8 days more. You can write to [] Evanston Hospital, Room 2326. Grandpa is feeling his ulcer a little and is on a bland diet. Otherwise O.K.

Love, Doris []
