Nash County
December 27th 1865

This Indenture made and intered into on the 27th day of December A D 1865 between B. B. Lawrence - Agent- of the County & State aforesaid of the first part, and the undersigned freed laborers to wit- Benjamin Speight, Alfred Harris & wife Emma Harris of the second part. Witnesseth, that the said laborers have agreed to work for the said B. B. Lawrence - Agent - from the first day of January A D 1866 to the thirty first day of December A D 1866: to do all kinds of labor common to the farms of the Country, to do their work faithfully, and to be respectful in their deportments.
And the said B B Lawrence - agent - doth agree to give in compensation for said labor rendered one fourth (1/4) of the crop made by the said laborers during the year - 1866 to wit  one fourth (1/4) of the Corn Peas Potatoes Cotton & oats to be delivered to them when the Crop is gathered and housed.
And the said B. B. Lawrence - Agent - doth further agree to furnish the land, teams and necessary implements for carrying on a farm, and doth further agree to furnish the said laborers with comfortable quarters, and to furnish to the said Benjamin Speight four & half (4 1/2) pounds of bacon (or its equivalent in other meats) and one (1) peck of meal per week and to the said Alfred Harris & Emma his wife each four (4) pounds of bacon (or its equivalent in other meats) and one peck of meal per week. 
The conditions of this indenture is such that if the aforesaid free laborers well and faithfully perform and comply with their part, then the aforesaid B. B.
